An Industry Defining Company

Karoo is a venture-backed startup, prior to Series A, on a mission to transform cardiovascular care. Our platform is designed to empower large provider groups and health systems to succeed in value-based care contracts with payers by improving patient outcomes and reducing cost of care through better coordination, analytics, and disease management. While our initial focus is cardiology, we are building a scalable operating system for managing complex conditions across the healthcare spectrum.

This is a rare opportunity to join a mission-driven founding team at a pivotal stage and help define the future of healthcare technology, with the power to improve the lives of patients with cardiovascular disease, the number one cause of death in America today.

The Role

We are seeking a Director of Data to own and build Karoo’s data and analytics function. This role sits at the intersection of data architecture, healthcare analytics, and business strategy. You will lead, manage, and mentor a multidisciplinary team of Data Engineers, Data Scientists, and Analysts, ensuring that our data infrastructure is robust, our insights are actionable, and our machine learning models are driving product innovation.

You will be responsible for designing how data flows through the company, defining how success is measured under value-based care contracts, and building an appropriately sized and high-impact analytics team over time. You will partner closely with Engineering, Clinical, Finance, Product, and Operations to ensure data is reliable, interpretable, and actionable.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You will both set direction and roll up your sleeves, especially early on.

What You'll Do

Analytics & Value-Based Care Measurement

  • Own analytics related to value-based care negotiation and performance, including total cost of care, utilization, attribution, and outcomes
  • Interpret payer claims, clinical data and other sources to assess impactable populations, savings opportunities, and performance versus baseline
  • Support payer and provider reporting, including JOCs and contract performance reviews

Metrics, Reporting & Insight Generation

  • Define and standardize key metrics tied to contracts, care delivery, and business outcomes
  • Build and oversee repeatable internal and external reporting, dashboards, and analyses
  • Enable faster insight generation so teams can answer core questions in days, not weeks

Leadership & Team Building

  • Serve as the central owner of data strategy, prioritization, and cross-functional intake
  • Hire, manage, and mentor analytics talent over time, starting with analysts, as the foundation matures
  • Translate complex data into clear narratives for executive, clinical, and operational audiences
  • Establish data as the backbone of the organization by embedding it into how teams plan, operate, and make decisions across the company

Data Architecture & Foundation

  • Collaborate with data engineering to ensure data quality, integrity, and security
  • Define HIPAA-compliant standards for data documentation and metadata management
  • Define the roadmap for Business Intelligence (BI) and analytics across the organization
  • Establish a single source of truth for company-wide KPIs
  • Establish standards for data quality, security, access, and governance

Advanced Analytics & Predictive Modeling

  • Risk Stratification: Develop and deploy models to identify high-risk, high-cost members before they utilize expensive services (e.g., ER visits, inpatient stays).
  • Actuarial Partnership: Collaborate with actuarial functions to refine Risk Adjustment (RAF) strategies and ensure the data reflects the true acuity of the population.
  • Clinical Intelligence: Oversee the development of "next-best-action" insights that can be surfaced to care teams to improve outcomes.

Technical Operations & Vendor Management

  • Payer Data Ingestion: Manage the strategic relationship with payers regarding data feeds and ensure high-fidelity ingestion.
  • Vendor Oversight: Evaluate and manage third-party vendors for data enrichment, such as social determinants of health (SDOH) data, HIE feeds, or risk-grouping software.
  • Audit Readiness: Ensure the data infrastructure is prepared for annual payer audits and regulatory compliance reviews.

Required

What We're Looking For

  • 10+ years of experience in healthcare data, analytics, or data platform roles, with increasing responsibility
  • Strong technical fluency in data architecture, relational databases, SQL, and analytics tooling
  • Deep experience with BI platforms (e.g., Tableau, Looker, Power BI, or Sigma)
  • Familiarity with the modern data stack (e.g., Snowflake, dbt, Fivetran)
  • Experience working with healthcare data such as claims, EHR, and operational datasets
  • Deep understanding of value-based care models, including TCoC, utilization, and outcomes measurement
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally and translate between technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience operating in regulated environments (HIPAA, SOC2, HITRUST familiarity strongly preferred).
  • Comfort building within the changing environment of an early-stage company

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience building or leading analytics functions at a care delivery organization or a company focused on value-based care
  • Familiarity with HL7, FHIR, ADT feeds, and payer data formats
  • Experience designing or partnering on modern data stacks in cloud environments (AWS or similar)
  • Background and experience in actuarial analysis or close partnership with actuarial teams

Why Join Us

  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Fully-remote work environment available
  • Full benefits package
  • A collaborative and transparent company culture that values creativity and ownership
